I Gave Myself The Job Of Writing A Comms Plan For People Power
Or: How to Eat the Rich (metaphorically, of course)
Can I tell y’all how fun all the interaction has been from my last post? A lot of us internet sqwakers write out of some compulsion to share observations. When we get comments and feedback that add to those observations it’s like well ok so there’s the meaning of life. So thank you so much for reading and commenting!
How do you follow up a popular post? Well I’m not sure, but I’m going to try a “Here’s what I’d do if I had this job” post. Is that not a thing? We can make it a thing. Embrace the No Rulez Era.
I dream that someday I’ll be called upon to help create a counter-comms program to defeat fascism and inspire a new world of people powered progress, creativity, and collaboration.
Who the call would come from, I have no idea. But it does seem like they’re letting anyone do anything at least at the highest levels nowadays, so we should all be prepared to take shelter or take over a company or comms department at any moment.
But I don’t have to wait to be called upon. Why don’t I share what I’m getting ready to hand over to my future media team and see if anyone has notes? I mean, sharing might spark some ideas for artists and writers and other awesome people with even better plans.
Some Background
I’ve applied to local, state, and national DNC/Dem communication jobs in the past. I’ve never even received a rejection notice. I have lots of experience, but don’t have the pedigree or upper level connections. It’s ok in the sense that I didn’t really want to get a job where apparently all you do is write fundraising emails and write overly-diplomatic reaction statements. But it’s not ok when I’ve seen so so so many communication fails over the years.
There’s a glaring message for us in these communication fails though: There is no hard line, no central goal, plan, or ideal future vision within the Democratic party. Most Dem leaders1 are straddling the line between voters and corporate influence. They’ve shown they will give up any minority group at any time to appease their own need for power, funding, and book promotion.
People don’t vote for Democrats because they feel they are part of a movement shaping the kind of expansive progressive modern world that unapologetically defends human rights and the planet, and recognizes all US citizens and workers as the ones in power (because it’s our f-ing government that we all chip in for). Nope, nothing that inspiring.
We probably vote for Dems as a kind of harm-reduction in the face of limited options. Lately, when we see them not even be able to hold a harm-reduction role in the most obvious of kinda-harmful vs nation-ending-harmful situations, we realize how little we’ve asked of them and how much of our everything they don’t mind giving away.
That’s why the whole “we need a Joe Rogan of the left” was ridiculous2. Most left-leaning podcasts are about the crazyazz stuff the very unified-in-messaging far-right is up to. And good for them, we need that. But Dems don’t have a thing that people want to join, let alone exciting enough to hype up.
The Dems thing is, “We’ll make it close to tolerable for you to live and work here, but in the end we’ll side with big business because we’ll tell you they create jobs and you need one so you can pay health insurance companies and trap yourself with a mortgage at one of the banks we used your money to bail out. Also your $25 donation now will help us defeat Tr**p.” It’s just too tricky to weave that into an entertaining lifestyle podcast.
If there has ever been an opportunity to create a thing it’d be right now. Maybe yesterday. It’s not going to be a centrist, “can we just get back to normal” thing. The DNC already used that one up with Biden and even tried to regift him because who could have foreseen the need for a much stronger message and candidate other than literally everybody. Naw, that’s all over. So is letting other lame-os define what normal is.
I told ya, it’s a new thing. My new imaginary job!
Here’s my sample proposal:
Counter-Comms Program Narrative: Operation For Freedoms Sake (F.F.S.)
NOTES: Draft created under the assumption that the people are leading this resistance. Budget, personnel, key influencers, potential political collaborators, sympathetic celebrities, equipment, media channels, distribution plan, network flow chart, timeline, anticipated obstacles, and intended outcomes not provided in this draft. Yet.
Appendixes detailing campaign specifics are still being drafted, but I noted where they will be inserted.
Candidate A refers to the current elected president. Name taken from DOJ affidavit and supplemental materials for the Doppelgänger and Good Ol’ USA foreign influence campaigns uncovered in the 2024 presidential election.
INTRO
We have been gifted a highly potent uniting cause. El*n served it to us on a platter. But it seems a lot of Dems don’t like to eat rich. So I’ve written a menu and guest list. I just need some help carving and serving the bird.
We will not let some silver-spooned try-hards fool us into hating each other.
THEY’RE TRYING TO MAKE US FORGET ABOUT PEOPLE
No corporation has ever been successful without workers. No corporation can survive without consumers. All corporations are run by people. All workers and consumers are people. Government cannot survive without people. All government is run by people. Militaries are run by people. Soldiers are people. Even international criminal conspiracies are run by people. F.F.S. efforts are centered around breaking the spell that citizens/people are up against insurmountable opponents.
The idea that opposition messaging needs to counter disinformation with correct information is flawed. It assumes that people are swayed by information, when they are much more swayed by emotion. Swayed by how it makes them feel about themselves.
Pointing out falsehoods and providing facts about a movement, an event, or a leader someone supports will have the effect of telling someone that THEY are wrong. If you’ve ever pointed out how wrong your neighbor, friend, coworker is in real life and it went well, let me know. I’ve yet to find a receptive audience for that kind of thing.
The concept of red vs blue is another one to let go of. It is the same division that got us to where we are and keeps us all in a WWE match. The d-bags with Connor McGreggor, no allegiance to truth or empathy and a direct line to the most watched cable news network are going to win that one. It’s great for media ratings but does nothing for the people. Even the most successful blue/Dem campaign would be a bandaid, one of those crappy ones that falls off after a hand washing, over the festering wound that corporate greed, unchecked tech growth, and financial influence has created.
That’s why counter-comms efforts, unless otherwise noted, should connect directly to citizens/working people, to their hearts and right in their pride centers. Make it matter to them. Give them something to discover. To feel smart about. To be a part of. Vibes, man, vibes.
ORGANIZE AND THRIVE
Organized citizens are one of the only things that wealth hoarders like Candidate A fear. We see evidence of this in his messaging. Falsely calling protests illegal, threatening jail, violence, and even terrorist classification on citizens exercising their first amendment rights. The F.F.S. answer to these threats is to get more people to join demonstrations [app. A] and to aggressively message throughout all social media and in conversations that organizing and demonstrating is a first amendment right.
A contact campaign to hold media outlets accountable for reporting demonstrations and citizen opposition is recommended. [app. B] As are OpEds (including opposition videos on social media) about why Candidate A is so afraid of United States Citizens organizing.
RIGHT-SIZING WEALTH: THE PEOPLE vs THE UNGRATEFUL BILLIONAIRES
We have a large portion of the population that are more pissed off about the one person they heard about taking advantage of SNAP benefits than they are about Candidate A pardoning several individuals that collectively ripped off 2 billion in Medicare funds.
People believe that housing costs are rising because private citizen city people with money move into small towns and suburbs. They aren’t aware of the corporate real estate groups that buy up and flip multiple single family homes. They probably don’t know that Candidate A profited off the 2008 housing crisis and even put some of the people responsible in his first cabinet. The corrupt financial forces at work aren’t as visible as the single instances they experience.
100 million dollars sounds the same as 300 billion dollars - it’s just a lot more than we have. Since we’ve been conditioned, by design, to equate wealth with intelligence and worthiness, the rich occupy a whole other untouchable, almost oh I don’t know I suppose one could say… aristocratic world, in our concept of social order. All that despite workers having everything to do with their wealth.
F.F.S. seeks to create graphics and short videos that put wealth and influence into working class perspective. [app. C] Information that shows how much more 300 billion dollars is than 100 million. How much 1 million dollars is to someone that has 300 billion. The messaging should include worker and CEO wage comparisons and connect greed and wealth hoarding directly to the negative effects on the lives of citizens. Showing a chart of how wages have stagnated while worker productivity has gone up and CEO compensation has skyrocketed - asking “How do you think this will play out if workers don’t recognize their own contributions and demand compensation?”
Let them know they are already part of a collective and already in a fight: The People vs the Ungrateful Billionaires. All in an entertaining, What they don’t want you to know framework.
We must expose the lie that innovation and progress is connected to corporations and wealth.
F.F.S. media teams will create a “Call for Billionaires to Justify Their Existence” asking for five bullet points for how they have improved the country more than they’ve harmed and taken from it in the past week. [app. D]
There are 801 billionaires in the United States3. F.S.S. Recommends a cut-the-shit congressional outreach campaign asking representatives why they are protecting the wealth of 801 people when tens of millions, many who work for or contribute to the grotesque wealth of those 801 people, can’t buy homes or afford health care. [app. E] The outreach should include a demand for a steep billionaire tax in place of cuts to federal programs the people have built over 250 years. As well as a demands for an end to lawmaker stock trading and the overturning of Citizens United.
F.S.S. will declare April National Income Disparity Awareness Month. [app. F] We will have F.F.S. team members reach out to local and state government officials in each state to request official proclamations. Press releases will be sent to media outlets and we will identify spokespeople for media interviews. People will be encourage to participate in National Income Disparity Awareness Activities.
In honor of Income Disparity Awareness Month, F.F.S. will work with instructional designers to create presentations about the dangers of income disparity. These presentations will be offered as lunch and learns at business and banks all over the country. A designated Income Disparity Awareness Month website will track and publish which organizations took us up on the offer, as well as provide downloadable assets for everyone to share and help raise awareness of the dangers of income disparity.
THEY SHOULD BE LISTENING TO US
The people must combat the longstanding assumption that wealth hoarders are superior in intelligence and therefore qualified to tell other people how to live. Any time a person speaks publicly about how people outside of their own experience should live, it should be met with strong public condemnation.
If El*n’s mom can go on tv and tell poor people to not go out to eat, the people can offer helpful advice to rich people suffering from greed and delusions of grandeur. F.F.S. suggests a call out to people encouraging them to create short, shareable advice videos to help wealth hoarders understand how to live.
NOTES ON THE WANNA-BE RICH
Upper-middle and upper class citizens are especially reliant on an underpaid, unquestioning working class. They often vote against the interests of the people they rely on for alls kinds of goods and services. They are likely going to take self-protective ostrich-ing measures during this authoritarian takeover. Without pressure, they will likely be the last to join an opposition. Friendly F.F.S. efforts to remind them of their various touch-points of exploited labor could be effective.[app. G]
FREEDOM CITIES
Propublica wrote about Candidate A and Freedom Cities in 2023. Wired recently reported on it. Candidate A has been meeting with the techbros about it. We’re probably closer to a green light than we know. “Freedom Cities” will give federal land to several ungrateful billionaires (that believe the USA is over) and allow them to develop and run the area as they see fit, as kings/overlords, without governance or regulation. This, all in the name of innovation and progress. As defined by billionaires with experience in creating toxic workplaces and selling our data to foreign countries.
Of course, something like universal healthcare would get the country almost up to speed with the rest of the civilized world, but it looks like this Freedom City biz is another initiative that looks over the masses of workers and citizens, and toward the realizing the dreams of a handful of scammers.
F.F.S. recommends preparing alternate public proposals for freedom cities. [app. H] They could be for entirely new cities, or for boosting existing ones. The outcomes should clearly connect benefits directly to American citizens in a new way beyond “you’ll get to be employed as a cryogenic freezer operator and shop at the company store”. This will not only allow citizens to see alternate interpretations of “innovation” and “progress” outside of growth-at-all-costs and wealth hoarding, it will also highlight the secretiveness and/or bias of the selection process. We hold the message, “Freedom for citizens, not freedom for ungrateful billionaires”
Other media makers can prepare work that highlights the disparity between progress and innovation for billionaires and the lack of benefit to citizens and workers. [app. I] Using past evidence of failed trickle-down economics. “The Golden Age of America” should be challenged at every opportunity and positioned as “The Golden Age For Ungrateful Billionaires”. We already have a powerful country. These freaks are trying to take it from you.
OPPOSE END TIMES
There is a strategy behind Candidate A spending the last decade convincing Americans that they place they built is a trash heap headed to the incinerator of hell. There is a reason he connected with religious groups horny for a Christian crusade revival and the end of the world. And there’s a reason he is chumming around with midlife-crisis-ing ungrateful billionaires. Candidate A has stated in several interviews throughout the years that he believes nuclear war is inevitable and that he believes life is meaningless so why not grab everything he can. (Or something nihilistic like that).
Using message repetition, he’s convinced millions of regular people spanning all ages to adopt the mindset of an aggrieved, ungrateful billionaire in his twilight years and he’s going to take it all with him.
F.F.S. efforts must challenge the end times mindset. [app. J] The end times the above mentioned people are feeling are actually the end of a long-gone world with tidy national borders, strict gender roles, and exalted businessmen. They have no imagination in change or in aging so we’ve all been made to suffer.
F.F.S. recommended plans include the creation and distribution of graphics and videos explaining how end times is old news. How it has been used in the past to steer people toward fascism.
Younger citizens could be effective messengers against the creepy selfish nihilism of those that want to burn it all down. Get your end times out of here, we’re just getting started. These may be your end times, but they aren’t mine. But of course, younger folks will have their own take and certainly - much hipper ideas.
F.F.S. Recommends further research into the effectiveness of messaging that co-opts end times language. like “These are end times for wealth hoarding”, or “end times for wealth hoarding”, etc.
ENTERTAINMENT
A lot of work has been done to obfuscate the collective power of people. US citizens have been systematically separated from awareness of their rightful ownership of their own government and their influence as an American worker and consumer. The entertainment industry, employers, media, politicians, and religion reinforce hierarchy, wealth worship, obedience, scarcity, fear, and helplessness in the face of corruption.
There are millions of couch commandos soaking up Jack Ryan and Reacher, when they could be edutained by stories of labor movements that offer just as much excitement. Badassery that is so close they could almost participate.
We are entertained by stories of individuals fighting corruption, but the corruption is always a nebulous blob. Even if we see a greedy character brought to justice, the audience has been trained to believe in the inevitability of corruption. There’s an acceptance that inevitable evil blob will return.
Because most films and television shows are filtered through a corporate approval process, we have been conditioned to view manufactured fights, wars that benefit corporations and wartime profiteers, as the hallmark of patriotism.
Stories about citizens directly fighting for freedom through individual and collective resistance, without the protection and resources of their own government (that they pay for through taxes and labor contributions), are usually put in special interest categories. Some are presented as feel good history. All tidy and compartmentalized so as not to connect the issues to present times.
The power of entertainment should not be underestimated. The goal of F.F.S. is to centralize citizens and workers as the protagonists and to put clear faces and names to corrupt individuals and institutions. [app. K] To burst the nebulous blob and wake up the masses.
F.F.S. recommends industry outreach to encourage awareness of wealth worship in entertainment and advocate for for more accurate representation of wealthy people - they are not geniuses and not more important than the people that helped them become rich.
Our collective imagination has been coopted by those that benefit from our complacency. Corporate funded media and entertainment has not allowed workers to see other possibilities. It is nearly impossible for people to comprehend a different way because they don’t see it. F.F.S. entertainment efforts should be focused on captivating stories that show interesting people-centered solutions and discoveries that activate a new area of the viewers imagination and puts them in the mindset of possibility.
An outreach program to educate, fund, and support writers, filmmakers, and game-developers is recommended. F.F.S. sees labor-movement and anti-billionaire themed game-development as an area of great potential. [app. L]
CONCLUSION & NEXT STEPS
These initial program notes will be made publicly available for notes and edits. Due to the urgent nature of the threat we are facing, no individual needs to wait to implement ideas while F.F.S. gathers information and assistance to expand on individual action plans.
If there is enough public interest, F.F.S. will post a printable and shareable version of the finalized counter-comms plan.
To be clear, there are several Dem reps and senators that are proving to be willing to stand up for the people. I’m talking about the Democratic Party.
I’d like to comment how insulting and absurd the endless post-game analysis of the Harris campaign was, but I’m still at risk of an aneurysm.
Numbers vary but it is around 800 https://inequality.org/article/billionaire-wealth-keeps-growing/
You gave yourself the assignment, and I'm officially giving you an A+ for Citizenship! Thank you for your excellent recommendations and for sharing them here. FFS, people!
